My European adventure -pain

Well this is the story of my TDY to Germany. I took the Air Greenland flight from Thule to Copenhagen, stayed the night and flew from Copenhagen to Frankfurt and then drove to Sembach AB. Amazingly I found the base. This first shot is a stitched image of the view from my dorm room, which was about the only nice thing about my stay ther at Sembach. No internet in my room, no AC and it was unusually hot...of course! In the end I survived.

This shot is of part of the town square of a place called Waldfischbach; it is about 40 minutes south of Sembach and I found it also! According to my records my 4 generation Seibert father was born and raised here. I was hoping to find a grave marker but between not speaking German and my lack of fortitude when it comes to dealing with stuff I never found anything. But it is a nice town stuck back in some really dense forest; part of what is called the Palitine I believe.

Further on down the road...I ended up in Copenhagen for the weekend and spent Sunday wandering around the downtown area. This photo shows the unique aspect of no highrise buildings which makes for some nice shots -especially of the various towers that rise around the area.I am not much of a photographer but one can see the close in vertical light aligned with the distant tower, in contrast with the horizontal boat and river, cool huh.
This one comes from crossing the street and thinking ..hmmm that looks neat, so I waited for the light to change again and stuck myself out for some touristee picture taking. I like the shot
Ok, and this one is from the Tivioli gardens, taken of the towers outside, another neat one...at least to me.
And not sure how this one comes out, you may have to click on it to see it better as it is another stitch, this time of Thule from North Mountain.
Ok well I am surprised I made it through another new post...

Be safe out there!

Spring Summer Fall

Well I left Spring hit Summer hard in Phoenix for a month, the day before I left it was 112F in Phoenix and 50 when I got to Thule. So back to the Fall! with Winter coming fast. Here are some images from the past couple months.
Here I am at the Crystal Cave - Much different than last year. The ice shelf had melted back much further so I could not go inside but I could drop down to the shore and explore the underside. The whole thing is melted out now and looks like a big cubbyhole.

A look at the inside. Not as good as last year. Global Warming has had an impact since this was earlier than last year..melting back faster.

This shot is kinda cool showing how a piece of the main rock fractured off and slide off. Time has also left some dirt deposits.

This is a shot of what I think and most people think is a UXO -Unexploded Ordinance- It is not supposed ot be in this area but I am glad it did not explode when I kicked it! When I saw the writing on it I thought ...hmmmm might not want to kick it again!

A nice shot of some sun glint on the bay with the ice breaking up.

It is summer and July is when we get in ships for resupply. Some bring fuel, some bring goods...like the new 26inch Flat Screen TVs we are all getting!

Also summer brings in some growth -these are cotton grass blooms. They are like cotton balls on a stick!

And the dogs! Coco and Obe and Tedi

Lets Eat!

Tedi with his Ecollar...got his nuts cut off ...now he is tame.

Can't say I really like this blog system...Really hard to configure the images and text but what do you expect for free.! Enjoy

Thule Trekkin

Well now that the sun is up and the temperatures have risen we are out an about. I have trimmed most of the following pictures to save space but the critical parts show through. This first image is of a P3 Orion -The Navy uses them as sub chaser but here the scientist from NASA use them for measuring ice thickness.

This shot is from a trip to Savissivik -a small community to the south about 1.5hr by Helio. This shot is of a glacier wall- cool huh!

And this would be Savissivik -Been around for about 75 years and are beholding to deliveries from the helicopter we road in for supplies. This is where I got a close up with a polar bear skin...really cool

Here is a shot from the helicopter of the ice in the water breaking up and a outcrop of rocks - small island -another cool shot.

Next is the land glacier that is about 8 miles from base. I walked about 2.5 miles over some rocky, some mushy ground to get here. The wall is about 60-80 feet high, maybe 100 but not sure. It is made up of the dirty ice where there are all these pebbles and dirt in the ice and then the ice/snow layer on top.

Of course a shot of me! And there is this odd "rock in a blanket" an odd thing- must have been a rock lodged in the glacier that was released and then managed to roll? There are some strange sites up here. There wer some larger rocks stuck in the glacier that were a matter of weeks, months or years from being released.

And lastly for this go around- the return of the Canadian Geese -most seem to think this is early-does that mean an early warm summer?? Lets hope so! See ya next time.
